If you commit to a quest to be healthier, there WILL BE SETBACKS. You’re gonna eat stuff that’s not great, or skip an exercise day, or gain a few pounds. None of that matters. What matters is that you stay committed and take the long view. If I were to graph out the data points of my weight loss for any 2 week period, you would see sharp peaks and deep valleys, and the start weight wouldn’t be too far off from the end weight. It might not look very encouraging.
But, If you looked at that same graph for the entire period of my weight loss, those peaks and valleys would have smoothed, and the graph would show an obvious downward trajectory. Take the long view.
I would even go as far as to say it’s good to intentionally set yourself back occasionally. Every 3 or 4 months, I order myself a 20” pizza (pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, jalapeños), and eat the whole thing over 2 days. It makes me gain weight, but I know that going into it. When I smash a giant pizza, it usually takes me about a week to get my weight back to where it was before the pizza, but I like pizza so I eat it sometimes.
And I don’t get down on myself when I do. I’m committed to my health and I know that a setback isn’t failing. And I like pizza. It makes me happy.
So, don’t get down on yourself. Commit to being committed. Show up tomorrow and keep going.
Be well!
