On Eating the Burger and Fries, but Skipping the Soda

I like junk food.  Sometimes I eat junk food.  I almost never get a soda with it, even though I really enjoy a nice cold Coke.  The reason?  Soda, and sugary stuff in general makes me gain weight like crazy, so I try my hardest to skip it.  And to me, it’s a fair trade-off to still be able to eat McDonalds with my kids sometimes.

Let me Google something real quick.

OK, one 20 oz coke is 240 calories, and 65 grams of sugar.  According to Google (infallible), that’s the equivalent of 5.25 TABLESPOONS of granulated sugar.  Holy crap.  Go eat 5.25 tablespoons of straight sugar.  I’ll wait.

In that context, the soda sounds even grosser than it was before I knew how much sugar 65 grams is.  Why don’t they just put that on the bottle.  “This soda has the equivalent of 5.25 TABLESPOONS OF SUGAR in it.”  Because no one would buy it, and only drug dealers and Europeans know what a gram is.

Takeaway: sugar is terrible for me and makes me gain weight like crazy, so I try to reduce or eliminate it from my diet.  If the same is true for you, look for ways to reduce the amount of sugar you consume by doing stuff like skipping the soda, not putting sugar in coffee or tea, not eating honey, not drinking juice, etc.!  Look at the label.

Be well!
