Do you have any tips for finding a pool?First, you’ll need a pool that’s at least at deep as you are tall, so your feet won’t touch bottom.  I REALLY recommend finding a pool as close to you as possible.  Convenience is a huge factor in consistency with any workout. I can’t stress this enough. It’s a lot easier to get motivated for a 5 minute drive than it is for a 20 minute drive.

Before you decide on a pool, take a tour.  Get oriented.  Learn how how to get in and out of the pool area.  Find out where the lockers are, bathroom locations, where you can change, if towels are provided, etc.  Basic knowledge about the things you’ll do immediately before and after the pool is comforting, as it removes a few of the worries.

You’ll need a pool that’s about as deep as you are tall, so you don’t touch bottom.  A lot of aquatic centers have both a lap pool and a recreation/general purpose pool, both with water deep enough to do SDP.

If they have a lap pool, find out if there is a way to reserve a lap lane. Lap lanes are wide enough to do the all of  the SDP movements (unless you have really long arms, like Manute Bol), and you’ll have the space to yourself.  However, lap pools are generally colder than recreation/general purpose pools, and I like the warmer water.

However, the warmer water of the recreation/general purpose pools also means sharing space.  I’ve learned to embrace sharing the space and smile when I get splashed by the folks I’m sharing space with.  Everything Zen.

This seems cool, but I'm not in very good shape and I'm afraid to get started. Any Advice?Getting started is the toughest barrier to overcome for any workout.  Maybe more so when it involves wearing a bathing suit. So here are some thoughts and ideas to hopefully help you feel more comfortable as you get started.

I went to the pool for the first time maybe not looking my best.  I had to own it.  I am who I am.  I look how I look.  I’m here to get healthier.  And really, it doesn’t matter what other people think.  It really doesn’t.

Take a deep breath and go.  It’ll be worth it.

In the many, many hours I’ve spent in the pool casually observing the goings-on, I’ve never heard anyone make a rude remark, and I haven’t seen anyone staring at folks that visit the pool.

A lot of people are overweight.  So, if you’re heavy, you are special, but it’s not because of your weight.  You really won’t stand out.

Take a deep breath and go.  It’s worth it.

Bring Company

When I was getting started, the thing that helped me get over my fear was bringing my kids with me.  Them being there made me feel better because in my mind it made me a dad at the pool with his kids, as opposed to a chubby guy at the pool by himself.  I hate the way it sounds, but I used my kids as little shields for my insecurities.  Maybe you can too. Your kids won’t mind.

I brought my kids with me about four times as I was getting started and getting more comfortable.  I quickly learned that the world wouldn’t end because I was chubby in public with my shirt off.  Everything was, and has always been, fine.  I also quickly learned that these kids were RUINING my workout, and started rolling solo.

You might get similar comfort by bringing another family member or a friend with you as you get comfortable.

Go During Off-Peak Hours

There are typically very few people in the pool early in the morning or during the workday.  When I go at noon or 1 PM during the week, and it’s usually me and maybe a few other people.

If you go from 5-7 AM, you might be the only one there besides the lifeguards.

Before 8-9 AM on weekends is usually pretty quiet, too.

Getting to the Pool is the Scariest Part

Once you’re in the pool, the water does a great job of obscuring you from surface level.  When I started, I looked at the water like an invisibility cloak.  Once I was in the water, people couldn’t really see me anymore, so I didn’t have to worry about it.

Do whatever it takes.  Get in the pool that first time and get started.  Commit to not touching the walls or bottom and keep moving - for as long as feels good for to you.   Come back the next time and try to do a little more.  Just a little.

Do I need to know how to swim? No! but you do need to be comfortable in deep water. I'm a poor swimmer, but I'm great at not drowning.

How long does it take to learn/memorize the movements? It's gonna be different for everybody. Swimmers, or people who are already very comfortable in the water will likely pick it up more quickly than someone who hasn't spent as much time in a pool previously.

I would guess most people would be comfortable with the movements around 3-6 months if they're practicing 3-4 times/week for 30 minutes.

SDP is a set of skills and it takes a little time to learn those skills.  It's WELL worth the effort, though!

Remember - once you've memorized/internalized the movements, you won't need the subscription anymore.  And, you'll have that knowledge for life.

Like riding a bike.

I will update this as I get reports back from customers.

How many times a week should I do SDP?Going every other day (3-4 times per week) is a great place to start.

How long should I do SDP each time?It doesn't matter.  Go the first time and see what you're capable of.  Try to get through each of the exercises at least one time, and see how you feel.

I started with 30 minutes and worked up to 55 minutes, and that's where I'm still at today.

Get started! That's the most important part.

How do I remember what to do once I'm in the pool?I recommend taking your phone with you and leaving it poolside for reference. Most modern smartphones are sufficiently water-resistant for poolside use.

You'll first want to verify that your phone is water-resistant, of course.

Keep a towel next to your phone so you can dry your hands.

As you memorize/internalize the movements, you'll become less reliant on your phone. Soon, you won't need it at all.  Or the subscription to SplooshDaPool.

How do I know I'm doing the exercises correctly? For each of the exercises, I've provided information about where you should feel it working.

Go slow and listen to your body as you complete each repetition. If you don't feel it working the areas described, experiment with your body position.

SDP is all about feel!
