On Looking Up

On Looking Up

This is a simple one.  Look up more often.

A couple of years ago, I was in an antique mall that I go to regularly.  At some point, I looked up and realized there was SO much stuff I had missed.  I had, for years, been going to this place and walking around with my eyes level or looking down at things.  It never occurred to me that I might be missing anything, but I was.  I spent the next 30 minutes going back through the store to see what else I’d missed. That was an interesting idea for me, and since then, I’ve tried to spend more time looking up.  Indoors and out.

Look up.  See the little spider in the corner of the ceiling, or the flock of geese flying over in formation.  Look at the clouds and the trees moving with the wind.  At the plane flying overhead leaving wispy contrails behind it – let yourself wonder where it’s headed.  Look up.

Not too long ago, I was walking in the woods by the river with my family, and I looked up to see a birdhouse nailed to a tree.  It was stenciled “#22” which told me there were probably at least 21 other birdhouses in those woods to look for, and maybe even the little birds that lived in them.

Don’t ignore the beauty that lives above eye level.

Be well!
